Observation and setting. Ngarrindjeri peoples of South Australia tell narratives of the ancestral being Ngurunderi. A 2024 study coauthored by the Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal Corporation and Ngarrindjeri scholar Christopher Wilson compares several narrative elements with independently reconstructed coastal changes: the Younghusband Peninsula, islands near the Fleurieu Peninsula, and the former land connection across what is now Backstairs Passage.

Dated material and method. Geological and sea-level research constrains when particular landscapes existed or changed. The study proposes that some corresponding events occurred roughly 6,800–10,400 calibrated years BP, and that Backstairs Passage was submerged around 11,000–10,100 cal BP. These are proxy dates for a proposed referent, not direct ages for the narrative, its present wording, or an unbroken chain of tellers. The narrative is layered and has been recorded in multiple forms.

Interpretations and alternatives. observed: documented narrative elements and reconstructed land and sea configurations. hypothesis: some elements preserve transmitted observations of early Holocene change. Alternatives include later inference from visible geography, combinations of accounts from different times, and interpretations of the words that do not require the proposed historical referent. An ancestral narrative also has meanings and authority that cannot be reduced to its usefulness as an environmental data point. The collaborative authorship matters to how it should be presented.

Next test and care. Read the full study's account of versions, sources, and uncertainties; identify which specific narrative details would have been unavailable to later observers, and compare those against independently dated landscape models. Follow Ngarrindjeri guidance before reproducing extended story material or sacred details. Preserve the distinct dates of documentation, putative event, and possible transmission.
