The Leang Karampuang composition

Indonesia

~51.2 ka browsing positiondated featured claim

Place and context. A ceiling panel in Leang Karampuang cave in South Sulawesi, Indonesia, documented in a poor state of preservation. The researchers identify a large painted pig and three human-like figures positioned as if interacting with it. Some details have been lost through exfoliation. The specific action depicted is unclear; the authors explicitly do not identify it as a definite hunt. Oktaviana et al., Nature 631 (2024), figures 1 and 3.

What was dated. Researchers used laser-ablation uranium-series imaging on calcium carbonate that formed over painted figures. One deposit over figure H2 yielded an estimated age of 53.5 ± 2.3 ka, reported as a conservative minimum painting age of 51.2 ka. Other overlapping calcite samples gave younger minimum constraints; those do not require the other figures to have been painted later. The measured mineral is not pigment. The grouping of figures into a single composition is an archaeological interpretation supported by their placement and appearance, not an independently dated moment of creation for every figure.

Claims. observed: pigment traces and calcite covering them. dated, qualified: at least one human-like painted figure existed by the reported minimum age, subject to the dating assumptions. inferred: the panel is a composed scene involving human-like figures and an animal. open: what event or imagined relationship is shown, whether every figure was made in one episode, and what any participant meant to its makers.

Revision note. The 2024 article called this the oldest known surviving representational/narrative art. A 2026 primary study of Liang Metanduno on Muna Island reports a hand stencil with a minimum age of 67.8 ka. That is older rock art, but a hand stencil is a different category from a figurative scene. We will use category-specific descriptions instead of repeating an unqualified “oldest art” claim.

Next discriminating work. Compare superimposition, pigment composition and mineral layers across the four sampled figures; follow independent assessments of the uranium-series method and preservation history. Record separately what the image shows and how its possible narrative is read.
